(West) Ordnance Survey map reference: SE 089439. Landranger map number: 104. Latitude: 53.535 degrees. Longitude: -1.52 degrees. Architecture: Embanked stone circle.. Length of the major axis: 9.2 metres. Length of the minor axis: 9.2 metres. Height of the highest stone: - Shape: Circle. Number of stones in the circle originally: 18 Number of stones in the circle now: 1. Impression of the site (10 amazing, 1 limp): 0 Burl rating of the circle: 3 (Ruined but Recognisable). Thom reference for the circle: -. Astronomical alignments from this circle: Lunar minor standstill. Excavations undertaken at this circle: -. Details of any finds at this circle: - This circle is not in state care. Access to the circle: The circle lies just off the road that leads to Ilkley moor from Riddlesden. It is not marked on the Landranger OS map. At Upwood there is a small cluster of buildings, 150m past these buildings is a public footpath leads off to the west. The circle lies about 45m down this path and on the right and on the other side of the fence in the picture. On my visit I mistakenly took the boulders in the picture below to be the ruins of the site, the remains actually lie on the other side of the fence, and a short distance to the north. Description:The Bradup stone circle is now ruinous and virtually unrecognisable. All that remains is a circular embankment with a single stone still in place. A survey in 1929 states that there were 12 stones in the complex and another in 1946 said there were originally 18, two of which stood at the centre. The stones were removed by local folk to build a small road bridge a hundred yards to the north. The site is reputedly haunted and has an alignment to the moon's minor standstill. Whist access to this site is very good it's condition does not warrant a visit by any but the very keen enthusiast. Additional information supplied by Paul Bennett. |
