It is next to the Dales way footpath and although not marked on the Landranger OS maps, it does appear on the 1:25,000 series and is marked as a cairn. The site can clearly be seen from the road and access is via a series of stepping stones that cross the river. It is possible to park near the site. Description:At first glance it becomes apparent that this is not a true stone circle but probably the remains of a cairn that has had large retaining stones built around it. The stones are all uneven in size and are placed so close together as to give the appearance of an almost complete wall. The 24 stones have had smaller stones placed in between them. There are no central structures but the interior is raised above the surrounding area and there is a distinct gap in the East section of the ring. All the stones are weather worn and gnarled creating shapes like those at Rollright and Arbor Low. The stones are quite small however and stand no more than 1m high. There are views along the corridor of the valley to the NW and SE. |
