Access to the circle:

The circle lies in a field next to Day House Lane just 0.5km from the main A 4259 main Swindon road and on the outskirts of the town. The stones can be seen from the road but they are only just visible in the short grass. There is no direct access as they lie in a field on the opposite side of a fence and there is no gate.

Description:

Coate is recognisable as half a ring of stones, the other half has been destroyed by the road. It is not very impressive. The stone boulders are buried deep within the ground, their tops protrude no more than 0.3m out of the grass. Only five of the stones survive in a large arc. This site and Elva Plain in Cumbria bear much in resemblance, not for their architecture (Elva plain is twice the size), but for their present day appearance, both are situated in a field of short grazed grass and both have stones that appear to have been buried by silt. None of the stones are higher than 0.3m above ground, and yet they seem large and boulderous, as if much of the stones remain hidden or have broken off at the base.

Coate

Only five low lying and unimpressive stones remain in a field next to the road.
