Access to the circle: There are six stone circles all within a short distance of each other on Machrie moor (not including Moss Farm Road). They can be found near the end of a farm track that leads from the A 841 road. The site is sign posted and a small car park is provided for visitors. It is easy to find but a walk of just over 1 mile is needed to reach the site. The track can be muddy and wet in places but it is fairly level and an easy walk. There is a stile about half way along this track next to the Moss Farm Road Circle (Machrie Moor 10), do not confuse this circle with the main Machrie moor sites 1-6, these are all clustered together at the end of this same path. Description:A concentric ring of stones with an inner ring made up of larger boulder stones. The tallest stone of the inner circle is 1.4m, the tallest of the outer stands at 0.93m. An impressive ring but it's remoteness and atmosphere is spoilt by an old farm building nearby. This site is the first along the track that leads to the main Machrie moor complex and is one of the most impressive of all the Machrie moor sites. Further along the track are the other circles, one being the impressive tall stones of Machrie moor 2 which can be seen a short distance away. Historic Scotland information boards give details of all the sites on the moor. |
