The circle lies just beyond this gate and is about 20m down the track and to the left. It is not marked on the Landranger OS maps. Description:There are no views from Doll Tor as it is surrounded by conifer trees but at one time there would have been good views to the west. The circle is not particularly impressive although it is neat and secluded. The stones are small and almost overgrown with grass and bracken. The centre of the circle is unobstructed. One stone has been carved with the inscription 'Doll Tor 1934', this was presumably done around the time of excavation. During this period a stones was 'mysteriously broken', and one stone can be seen to be cemented together, presumably the broken stone. Other stones can be seen scattered around, these are the remains of stone lined cists. Doll Tor is not a particularly impressive, but it's situation in an enigmatic, secluded woodland setting is enchanting. It is dated late within the stone circle building tradition, around 1800BC in the Bronze age. |
